Destination Imagination |
|
|
Destination Imagination is the largest worldwide creative problem solving program for teams preschool through college. Destination Imagination has been an extra curricular program for several years at Blessed Sacrament . Teams can take part if they wish in a regional competition which progresses to a state competition and then to a Global Final Competition. Teams of no more than seven members choose from five published challenges. Each team's solution varies depending upon the imagination of the team members. Destination Imagination is open to any and all participants of every cognitive ability.
The mission of Destination Imagination is to foster the development of creative thinking and problem solving skills with emphasis on the "process." Great minds don't necessarily think alike; there are no set "right" answers. Those involved discover that creative solutions come from teamwork, cooperation and risk taking. Teams generally form shortly after school begins in the fall. The team members select their challenge to solve and spend up to 5 months meeting weekly to solve and develop the challenge. The regional competitions usually take place about mid March.

Forensics |
|
|
The Forensics season runs from November to late
February or early March. The team meets weekly and the season
culminates in two festivals or competitions. Students select and
prepare a performance piece from one of several categories within
Forensics: speech, interpretation of poetry or prose, storytelling,
news reporting and acting. Coaches follow the guidelines and
the philosophy of the middle-school division of the WHSFA: to foster
student participation in a team activity; encourage learning and
improvement of improve public speaking skills, and to enable students
to feel successful through achievement. While students do participate
in Festivals or competitions, they are judged against a standard of
performance, not against each other. WHSFA sums up their philosophy:
“not to defeat each other, but to pace one another on the road to
excellence.” The Forensics team is coached by Elizabeth
First. Mrs. First participated in Forensics at both the high school and
college level, has been a festival judge for over 20 years, and has
coached Forensics since 1992. Sarah Gavigan has been assistant coach
since 1993. Parents of team members are invited to assist at practices
and are instrumental in helping run Festivals that our school hosts. |
