Thanks so much for all your help with getting students caught up with missing work!  We are starting a new quarter in January.  This would be a good time to check in with your child about their school supplies.  Many students are out of pencils, correcting pens, and erasers.

Homeroom (Room 203) – Permission slips are due for the field trip in February to the Overture Center.  Here is a link to information about the performance.  .http://www.overturecenter.com/production/the-peking-acrobats

We will be setting goals for the third quarter.  When report cards come home discuss some possible options.  These could be about organization. reduding the amount of missing or late work, practicing math facts or reading more minutes each month.

Reading (Room 203) – We are writing advertisements for a bakery this month.  Ask your child what they have learned about qualities of a good advertisement.  We also enjoyed a good story about Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt.  Students are enjoying reading parts for a play. We have some talented actors in our class.

Language Arts – We are reading biographies for the Black History Fair and writing a speech.  We will do most of our work writing the speech at school.  But students will need help with choosing a costume and props from home.  Please do not feel the need to purchase items, but instead, make or borrow items.

We have been working on adjectives to add sparkle to our writing.

Math – We are doing a great job with multiplication.  Please practice math facts with flash cards, web sites, or the Salute game.  We will be working with EXCEL on the computer to do multiplication problems the week of January 23rd..

Social Studies – We are beginning our study of the Midwest region of the United States.  Students will need to know the states and state capitals.  Use car time as an opportunity to practice states and their capitols.

Here are some online games for practice.

Religion – We are memorizing the Ten Commandments.  Ask your child to recite them in order for you.  Students have a memory tool using a ship to remember key words in the Commandments.

Have a great January!  Remember to send boots, hats, gloves, and snow pants to school.  The playgound is filled with the excitement of snow forts and sliding hills.

Knowing math facts automatically requires lots of practice to store theses facts in the file cabinets of our brain.  Students who use paper and pencil or count on their fingers are at a disadvantage when we start solving more complex problems such as multi-digit multiplication and long division.
