There is a window for development of core academic skills, and it varies from child to child. One child may be reading fluently at age 5. Another child might be reading at age 6. In our multi-age program, we are able to meet children's needs at their ability level, rather than their "grade."
Teachers present learning as something joyful and fulfilling, and they seek to nurture a desire for life-long learning. Through a variety of experiences, such as learning centers, small group and large group instruction, children are provided the opportunity to become excited about the world around them, and for the subjects that make for a well-rounded person. The curriculum includes reading, math, language arts, penmanship, faith formation, social studies, science, art, Spanish, music and gym. Students begin learning cursive in second grade. Technology is introduced early on but never replaces books in our primary classrooms.
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd forms the base of faith formation. Students learn how Jesus loves them and how they may serve others. They learn about the liturgy and explore the sacraments, with a particular focus upon the Eucharist and Reconciliation.
